When the Visa Clock Starts Ticking ✈️ ⏰

By Kirsten Halcrow
When we landed in the U.S. in August 2022, we didn’t just arrive with suitcases and dreams — we arrived with a mission:

To start a new life, get settled into a new country, and build a U.S. division of a South African business from the ground up — all within our first 8–9 months.

Why the rush? Because we came in on an L1 visa, one of the more complex (and often misunderstood) U.S. immigration paths.

Despite what many people think, the L1 is not designed for small family businesses or side ventures — it’s for companies who are genuinely expanding into the U.S. market, with the expectation that you’ll be operational, growing, and hiring quickly.

We submitted our L1 petition in June 2022, got approved, and were here by mid-August. And from that moment, the clock started ticking.

You typically get a 1-year visa to prove yourself. By month 8, you’re preparing your case to show U.S. immigration that your business is real, viable, and ready to stay. How many businesses can make that happen in a new country in 8-9 months?

And here’s what many people don’t see:

While you’re navigating legal requirements, corporate structures, market research, hiring, compliance, and revenue —
– You’re also trying to get your kids through their first day of school.
– You’re figuring out where to buy groceries.
– Building a credit score.
– Getting a drivers licence.
– Learning how healthcare works… actually how everything works.

It’s not a small ask.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:
– The L1 is not just a visa. It’s a test of resilience. Of strategy. Of belief in yourself and what you’re building.

If you’re walking this path — or considering it — know this: It’s hard. But it’s possible. Especially for South Africans! (let me just slip that in 😉 )

We’re still on the journey, and we’re learning every day.

But if sharing our experience helps even one family take a step with more clarity or confidence, it’s worth it.
