Last summer, we had one of the most special milestones in our journey: our first family visit. My mom and dad, my sister and her husband, and my two nephews made a trip to the USA to visit us in our new home.
And while we had been sending photos and video calling often, there is something profoundly different about them being here, walking through our local grocery store, seeing where our kids go to school, sitting at our dinner table, meeting the new friends who have become our village.
Suddenly, our life wasn’t just a story we told, it was a story they could see and touch and feel.
What we realised is that this visit wasn’t only for us. It was for them too.
It gave them peace. They saw we were okay. That we were slowly building a life filled with love and community.
Now, when we mention a Saturday run to Target or a weekend in Cocoa Beach, they know. They’ve been there. They can picture it. And that makes the distance feel just a little smaller.
If you’ve ever been on this journey, you know how deeply emigration affects the ones left behind. Letting them into your new world doesn’t erase the goodbyes, it brings comfort, healing, and connection on both sides.
Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give each other is simply to see, to really see… the life that’s unfolding across the ocean.
