We Were Nobodies

By Kirsten Halcrow
Or at least… that’s what it felt like when we arrived in the U.S.

Despite our ages, having bought and sold property, built careers, paid off cars, managed businesses, and raised a family — when we landed here, we started at zero.

– No credit score.
– No local history.
– No proof that we were anything but “new.”

– We couldn’t get a bond (mortgage).
– We couldn’t rent without hefty deposits.
– We had to rewrite our learner’s and driver’s licenses — after more than 25 years behind the wheel.

We were nobodies on paper.

And that’s one of the hardest parts of immigration no one talks about. You leave behind more than just geography — you leave behind your financial identity, your status, your track record. You’re not “starting a new chapter”… you’re starting the book again from page one.

But here’s what I’ve learned:
– Being a nobody doesn’t mean you don’t know how.
– It just means you have to prove yourself… again.
– And that’s what we did.

– We built a credit score.
– We learned the system.
– We jumped through the hoops.

And just more than a year after we landed we received the keys to our first U.S. home. 🏡🔑

This isn’t just a photo of us with a key — it’s a symbol of persistence, resilience, and belief that starting over doesn’t mean starting small.

To anyone walking this path: yes, it’s hard. But yes, it’s possible.

You might arrive as a nobody, but you get to decide who you become.
