There is no single best way to move belongings to the United States. Most families use a combination of checked baggage, air freight, sea freight, courier services and purchases after arrival.
Checked and excess baggage
Baggage is useful for documents, medication, initial clothing and high-priority personal items. Compare the airline’s extra-bag price with courier or air-freight rates, and keep customs restrictions in mind.
Air freight
Air freight is faster than sea freight and can suit a small, valuable or time-sensitive shipment. Chargeable weight may reflect volume as well as actual weight, so bulky low-value items can be expensive.
Shared or full container
A shared container can reduce cost when volume is limited, but consolidation may affect timing. A full container provides more control and capacity but brings higher packing, freight and destination costs.
Ask every mover the same questions
- Is the quote door-to-door or port-to-port?
- Which destination, inspection and storage charges are excluded?
- What insurance is offered and how are claims valued?
- Who prepares the inventory and customs documentation?
- How long is the realistic delivery window?
- Who handles delivery at the U.S. destination?
Vehicles need a separate feasibility check
A vehicle that works perfectly in South Africa may not meet U.S. safety, emissions, registration or insurance requirements. Confirm federal importability and the destination state’s rules before paying shipping costs.
