I’ve acquired a new skill!

By Kirsten Halcrow
This week, I made my first batch of biltong — and honestly, I’m not sure if I was more proud of the result or the fact that my whole house now smells like home. There’s something magical about the taste of biltong ❤️ — that unmistakable mix of coriander, vinegar and nostalgia that instantly transports you back across oceans.

But this little win wasn’t just about food.
– It was about adapting.
– Learning something new.
– Always having room for improvement.
– And not letting the limits of where you live dictate what you get to enjoy.

That’s been the heart of our emigration journey:
Finding ways to bring the best of where we came from into the life we’re building now.

We’re not trying to recreate South Africa in the USA — we’re trying to carry it with us, even as we fall in love with new traditions, new people, and new experiences.

So here’s to small wins, bold experiments, and the happiness that comes from making something with your hands that feeds your heart too.
